What it shows
Each point is the number of Chicago Police Department arrests with a DUI charge in one clock hour of the day, from January 2022 to October 2026. Two lines compare weekdays (Monday to Thursday) with weekends (Friday to Sunday). It is one city: not Cook County, not Illinois, and not a national pattern.
How to read it
- Read left to right from midnight. Higher means more arrests in that hour.
- The shaded band marks the busiest four hours of the day, so the late-night peak is easy to find.
- Weekdays add up four days of each week and weekends three. A day is the calendar day of the arrest time, so 1 AM on a Monday counts with the weekdays, though the night began on Sunday.
- Turn a line off with its key to compare the other on its own.

- 1.8
Caveat. The hour is the arrest time as Chicago records it, in local time; the weekday is the calendar day of that time. Monday to Thursday is weekday and Friday to Sunday is weekend.
- 1.9
Caveat. Counts are arrests, not people: a person arrested twice counts twice.
