What it shows
Shows the DWI charges that Texas law enforcement agencies reported to the Department of Public Safety, year by year. A charge is not a person: someone charged twice counts twice. The year view shows the state total, the change from year to year and how many agencies had a charge listed, and can set up to two counties or agencies beside each other. The county view ranks counties by count or per 100,000 residents. The agency views list agencies, with search and filters by type and county, or lay all agencies out against all years in one grid. Select a county or agency for its yearly line and figures. The Department prints a row only for an agency with at least one charge, so where an agency has no number for a year, the chart leaves a gap instead of drawing a zero.
How to read it
- The line is the total reported by all listed agencies. The dashed segment and hollow dot mark a preliminary year that may change. Click any year to look at that year in the other views.
- The small bars underneath show how many agencies had a charge listed each year. A missing number means no charge was listed for that agency in that year, not that a number was withheld.
- In the county view, bars rank counties by charges or per 100,000 residents. State agencies, almost all of them the Department of Public Safety itself, are not assigned to a county in the report, so county counts leave them out; very small counties get no rate.
- In the agency-by-year grid, each cell is one agency in one year. Shading is the same for every row, or relative to the agency’s own highest year. A hatched cell means no charge was listed.
- Charge counts reflect enforcement effort as well as behavior, and an agency’s name can change between reports, so a few renamed agencies appear as two series.

Coverage. DWI charges reported to DPS by every Texas agency that filed one, from the DPS reports 'DWI Report by Agency' (2021 to 2026). Each arrest year comes from the latest report that covers it. DPS defines a charge as a DWI charge on a Texas arrest record. County populations: U.S. Census Bureau, county population estimates, Vintage 2025 (July 1, 2025).
- 1.6
Caveat. Counts are DWI charges, not people: a person charged twice counts twice, and one arrest can carry more than one DWI charge.
- 1.7
Caveat. Every county-year in the source reports adds up to DPS's printed total, and the 2026 report matches DPS's own one-page summary (86,478 charges for 2024, 90,453 for 2025).

- 1.8
Caveat. 2025 is preliminary: agencies are still reporting for the newest year.
- 1.9
Caveat. DPS prints no row for an agency with no charges that year, so a missing number means no charge was reported, not a number that was withheld. The chart shows how many agencies reported each year.
- 1.10
Caveat. State and federal agencies (almost all DPS, listed as 'DPS <county> county arrest reporting' or Highway Patrol) are not assigned to a county by DPS and are shown under no county, so county totals leave them out. The county arrest-record file (a separate dataset) counts those arrests in the county.
- 1.11
Caveat. DPS spells agency names differently from one report to the next (older reports add the agency's city). Names that differ only by a trailing city or common abbreviations (PD, Dept, SO) were treated as one agency, only when the two never appear in the same year; a few renamed agencies still appear as two series.
- 1.12
Caveat. The agency type (police, sheriff, college, state) is read from the agency's name by rule; DPS does not publish it.
