duiarrested.com is a data analysis and visualization project. It is building a public dataset from DUI and DWI county booking records, and it publishes charts, maps and state and county profiles that newsrooms, service providers and researchers can read, cite and embed.

01Data status

What's real, and what isn't

Sample dataSome charts use published records and name their source, period and date. Every other statistic is a sample figure or an estimate, and is labeled as such.
From official sources

State law

BAC limits, license-hearing windows and penalties are read from each state's code or an official agency page, and each state's page lists the statute and its exact words. Where a source could not be read, the figure is left out. Not reviewed by an attorney: check the official code before relying on a figure.

County figures

Processing times, bail ranges and release rates on county pages are illustrative placeholders, not derived from real booking records.
Estimates

Calculators

The cost, bail and processing-time calculators run on illustrative assumptions. The license-hearing window calculator counts the statutory windows listed on the state pages, and the BAC calculator uses a formula; neither uses booking data.

Charts and embeds

7 of 13 charts use published records and name their source and date. Their pages list the caveats. The rest are labeled as sample data.

02The project

What the site is, and who it is for

Who it is for

Newsrooms and researchers who want citable, embeddable charts with the method shown; service providers and adjacent businesses that want local volume and timing figures; and anyone analyzing impaired-driving enforcement. Every chart on the Data page has its own page with the method, how to read it and an embed code; the Embed page lists them with their code.

What we are building

We plan to collect public booking logs from county jails to measure patterns: how long processing takes, what bail amounts look like, how time of day and day of week affect outcomes. Those results will power our charts and calculators once they are published.

Pilot counties

Our first booking-log collection is planned for Harris County (Houston, TX), Maricopa County (Phoenix, AZ), and Cook County (Chicago, IL), three large DUI jurisdictions. Booking-log collection has not started.

State law summaries

For all 50 states we maintain summaries of DUI laws, penalties, license-hearing windows and key statutes. Each figure is read from the state's code or an official agency page and listed with its statute and exact words; where a source could not be read, the figure is left out. They have not been reviewed by an attorney.
