The state’s rate divides its arrests by its residents 18 or older, because the Division counts adults only. It uses the Census Bureau’s July 1, 2025 estimate (Vintage 2025) for every year, so a rate for an earlier year is only approximate.

What it shows

Shows the arrests of people 18 or older for fingerprintable DWI offenses, felony and misdemeanor, that the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services counted in each county, year by year from 2015. The year view shows the state total, its rate per 100,000 adults and the change from year to year, and can set up to two counties beside each other. The county view ranks every county for a year by its count, with each county’s own line beside its bar. Select a county for its figures, its rank, its share of the state and the felony and misdemeanor parts of its count. A county is where the arrest was recorded, not where the person lives, so the chart gives counts and no county rates. The Division counts fingerprintable offenses only: a lesser impaired-driving charge that is only a traffic infraction is not in its table.

How to read it

  • The line is the state total: the sum of its counties. The dashed segment and hollow dot mark a preliminary year, if the source has one. Click any year to look at that year in the county view.
  • The state’s rate divides its arrests by its residents 18 or older, because the Division counts adults only. It uses one population estimate, July 1, 2025, for every year, so a rate for an earlier year is only approximate.
  • In the county view, bars rank the counties for the chosen year by count, and the small line beside each bar is that county’s own range over all the years: compare shapes, not heights. Search narrows the list.
  • There is no county rate and no ranking by rate. A county’s count is where the arrest was recorded, so it says more about where police stop drivers than about who lives there.
  • The chart starts in 2015.
  • Arrests are not people, and the counts reflect enforcement effort as well as behavior.

  5. 1.5

Coverage. Arrests of people 18 or older for DWI (felony and misdemeanor), by county, from the Division of Criminal Justice Services table 'Adult Arrests 18 and Older by County: Beginning 1970'. The Division counts arrests for fingerprintable offenses only. Population: U.S. Census Bureau, county population estimates, Vintage 2025 (July 1, 2025), all residents and residents 18 or older.

  6. 1.6

Caveat. Counts are arrests, not people, and only people 18 or older. Because the table counts adults only, a rate per 100,000 should divide by the number of residents 18 or older, not by all residents.

  7. 1.7

Caveat. Fingerprintable offenses only, by the Division's definition: a lesser impaired-driving charge that is only a traffic infraction is not in the table, so this is narrower than every impaired-driving arrest.

  1. 1.8

Caveat. County is where the arrest was recorded, not where the person lives.

  2. 1.9

Caveat. The five New York City counties together had 3,386 DWI arrests in 2025; the New York City Police Department's own arrests for intoxicated and impaired driving are within 1.3% to 2.5% of the Division's count in every year 2019 to 2025.

  3. 1.10

Caveat. The table does not say whether the latest year can still change.

  4. 1.11

Caveat. Population is the Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 (county population estimates, Vintage 2025), not a Division number. The same figure is used for every year, so a rate for an earlier year is only approximate, and the further back, the less so.
