Cook County, IL: DUI Arrest Hotspots

A 3D map of where DUI arrests cluster in Cook County, IL, drawn as columns, a heat surface, a grid or illustrative flows on areas about 3 km across, with filters for time of day and weekdays versus weekends and a button that plays through the day.

Sample data

What it shows

The map is built from hexagonal areas about 3 km across. Pick a style: columns, whose height and color show the number of DUI arrests in each area for the hours and days you pick; a heat surface, a smooth picture of the same counts; a grid of squares that average the areas under them; or flows, an illustration of moving dots drawn from the same counts. Counts are published for areas only, never for individual arrests or addresses.

How to read it

  • In Columns, taller means more arrests: height is in direct proportion to the count, and colors follow the legend, from the fewest arrests to the most, for the hours and days selected. Heat and Grid keep one scale for the whole county, so quieter hours look quieter.
  • Play the day steps through morning, afternoon, evening and late night; pick a time of day to stop it.
  • Flows is an illustration, not data: the published counts hold no routes, so the site draws lines and moving dots from them toward a made-up booking point at the busiest area. One dot stands for about the number of arrests shown under the map, and a notice on the map says the flows are not real trips.
  • Drag to move the map. In Columns, Heat and Flows, hold Ctrl and drag (or right-drag) to rotate and tilt it; Ctrl + scroll or the buttons zoom, and the 3D button looks straight down. Grid always looks straight down.
  • An area appears only when it has at least 5 arrests in the selection, so a count cannot point to a person or a street.
  • Arrest locations follow where people drive and where police patrol as well as where impaired driving happens.

About the data

Sample data
  1. 1.1

Status. Sample data. These figures were written by us to show how the chart works. They are not measurements and they carry no source. Please do not cite them as findings.

  2. 1.5

Coverage. Synthetic areas from a seeded model of a city core and a few satellites. Not arrest locations.

  3. 1.6

Caveat. No place is named, and no area is claimed to be a real hotspot.

  4. 1.7

Caveat. Real data will publish only areas with at least 5 arrests in a period, so a count cannot point to a person or a street.
