What it shows

Each tile is a state (plus DC), colored on a low-to-high scale by the number of DUI arrests per 100,000 residents. Using a rate instead of a count lets large and small states be compared on the same footing.

How to read it

  • Colors follow the legend, from the lowest arrest rate to the highest. The legend lists the exact classes.
  • Rank 1 is the highest rate. States with the same rate share a rank.
  • An arrest rate reflects enforcement as well as behavior. A state that patrols more can show a higher rate for the same amount of impaired driving.
  • States with no published data are drawn as dashed outlines and marked no data.
